Don-ShulmanDon Shulman, President and CEO

Don joined our staff in March of 2012. Don has been working with seniors his entire career. He and his wife Debbie reside in Olney, Maryland, and have 3 sons, 1 granddaughter and 3 grandsons. Don is originally from upstate New York where he received his BS degree from SUNY Plattsburgh in Nutrition and Dietetics. Don is a Registered Dietitian and completed his internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in 1979. He spent 23 years in senior dining with Marriott and then Sodexo. For the past 7 years, Don was a General Manager with Sunrise Senior Living in their full service communities in Arlington, Virginia and Bethesda, Maryland.

Rachel Stevens, Director of Operations

Rachel has been with AJAS since 2013. She started as the Communications and Membership Coordinator and is now the Director of Operations. Rachel is a proud graduate of Kent State University where she received a B.A. in Interpersonal Communications and graduated Cum Laude. She was inducted as a member of the Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society. She also received an Associate’s degree in Interior Design from Cuyahoga Community College where she graduated Cum Laude and served as president of its chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). In her spare time, Rachel is on the Executive Committee of the DC Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America.

Joni Lucas, Communications Coordinator

Joni has more than a decade of experience in daily and national trade journalism and non-profits. Formerly senior editor of a national professional association magazine, she built and ran the daily operation of the monthly publication before she took a break to raise a family. Along with rearing her 3 children, Joni did volunteer work and explored an interest in photography. Before joining AJAS in 2017, she worked for an architecture and interiors photographer shooting model homes in the greater Washington, D.C., area. Additionally, Joni serves as the team photographer for her neighborhood swim team in Potomac, Md., taking photographs at meets and producing video slideshows for the team. Joni holds a BS in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
